Cochineal Extract - Introduction & List of Products

Cochineal is a scale insect that lives on the plant Cacti. Female cochineal insects are used to produce scarlet, orange and red tints/colors. The process involves killing of the insects by extreme heat after which they are dried and converted to a cochineal dye/extract. It takes about 70,000 cochineals to make one pound of cochineal dye. Do I need to say that this extract is NOT vegetarian?

This extract is used in popular 'Orange & Berry Juices' to add color to the drink. Look out for 'Cochineal Extract' or 'Carmine' on the ingredient label.

The only good part about this ingredient is that FDA has issued a declaration (last updated on Jan 15, 2011) that manufacturers require to publish this ingredient on their new packaging labels. Check this link: http://www.fda.gov/ForIndustry/ColorAdditives/GuidanceComplianceRegulatoryInformation/ucm153038.htm
While manufacturers implement this on their print runs from now on, there may still be bottles with older packaging on the market.

I am working on populating this list further but below is what I currently have:

1. Tropicana Pure Premium - Orange Strawberry Banana Juice - Cochineal Extract
2. Tropicana Ruby Red Grapefruit Juice - Carmine
3. Tropicana Strawberry Orange Juice - Carmine

Animal Rennet - Introduction & List of Brands & Products containing Animal Rennet

Cheese product labels seldom list which type of rennet was used to make the cheese. Rennet can be either animal-derived, microbial, vegetable or GMO (genetically modified) rennet. Animal-derived rennet is made from a collection of enzymes from the fourth stomach of ruminant animals (kid, calf, or lamb). This enzyme is used to coagulate the milk in to cheese. In summary, Animal-derived rennet or Animal-derived enzymes would classify as NOT vegetarian. GMO, Microbial and Vegetable rennet or enzymes would be considered vegetarian-friendly in most instances.

Below is a list of products that contain 'Animal-derived  rennet' but don't list as such in their ingredients list. After due research of their website (http://www.fritolay.com/our-snacks/lays.html) and phone calls to Frito-Lay - I have figured and individually confirmed the presence of animal-derived enzymes in the below brands.

About this page

I live in Los Angeles, California. Being a Jain, I practice a Lacto-Vegetarian diet. Over the past few years that I have been in California - I have come across many products, brands, snacks and restaurant/fast food menu items that look Vegetarian but are NOT. Reason being that Manufacturers don't list ALL the ingredients that go in to a product and thereby we stand unaware of what we are consuming. After due research and phone calls with nutritionists at such manufacturing companies, I built myself a reference list of such products that I shouldn't consume. This page is an effort to share my findings with others

On an ongoing basis, this page will list brands, products, restaurants that are not good for Vegetarians.
